What Does the Research Actually Say?

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is the subject of more than 1,000 peer-reviewed publications, with Japanese and Chinese research groups leading the field. This page cites the real studies, the promising results and their limits, so you can read the evidence exactly as it is.

Ten hydrogen water human studies are set out in full below, each finding beside its limits, followed by the trials that found nothing and an honest list of what nobody has established yet. No study on this page tested a Peakspan device.

The science

Studied hard. Claimed straight.

Most confusion about hydrogen water comes from words rather than data. Three definitions first, what oxidative stress actually is, what "selective antioxidant" does and does not mean, and what these trials actually measured, and then the four ideas the research is built on, each with the human evidence attached.

Definition 01

What oxidative stress is

Using oxygen to make energy produces reactive molecules as a by-product, free radicals and related species. At normal levels they are useful: the body uses them for cell signalling and for killing pathogens. "Oxidative stress" is simply the name for the state where they are produced faster than the body's own clearance systems mop them up.

It is not a diagnosis and there is no single test for it. Researchers measure it indirectly, through proxy markers: 8-isoprostanes in urine, TBARS, biological antioxidant potential, or the activity of the body's own antioxidant enzyme SOD. Every "oxidative stress fell" result on this page means one of those proxy markers moved in one group of people.

Why it matters here: a marker moving is a measurement, not a health outcome. None of the trials below followed people long enough to show that moving a marker changed anything about their lives.

Definition 02

What "selective antioxidant" means

A vitamin-style antioxidant tends to mop up broadly, which is why researchers have worried that high-dose antioxidant supplements can damp down the very signalling radicals training relies on. The hypothesis behind molecular hydrogen is different: H₂ is the smallest and lightest molecule there is, so it diffuses freely into cells, and the proposal is that it reacts preferentially with the most destructive species (the hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite) while leaving the useful signalling ones alone.

That proposal comes from Ohsawa and colleagues in Nature Medicine, 2007, the paper that started the field. It is the leading hypothesis, not a settled fact. Other researchers argue the reaction rates in the body are too slow to explain the observed effects, and propose gene-signalling or gut-microbiome routes instead.

So "selective antioxidant" describes what scientists are testing, not a proven action of any product. We use the phrase because the literature uses it, not as a claim about what a bottle of water does in you.

What the studies actually measured

Almost every human trial on this page measured surrogate markers: blood lipids, oxidative-stress markers, questionnaire scores, heart rate, cell-level readouts. Surrogate markers are cheap and fast, which is why small teams can run these studies, but they are stand-ins. They are not disease outcomes, and a change in one does not establish that anything downstream happens.

The scale is small and the conditions vary: roughly 10 to 60 participants (one trial reached 159), 4 to 24 weeks, hydrogen concentrations of roughly 500–1,600 PPB and daily volumes of 0.5–2 litres. Different water, different devices, different schedules, different populations.

Read every result below as: this marker changed, in this group, under these conditions, and then read the limit line under it, which we have written for every single study.

The four ideas being tested

The Biology, and What H₂ Is Researched For

These are the four framings the field works in. The first two lines of each card are the plain-language version; the line underneath is what the human trials on this page actually found, including where they found nothing. Read "studied as" and "researched for" literally: they name a question under investigation, not a demonstrated effect of any product.

The biology

Hard sessions and daily stress raise oxidative load, reactive molecules that pile up faster than the body clears them.

How H2 helps

Molecular hydrogen is studied as a selective antioxidant, researched for how it supports the body's own defence systems.

In the human data: Kajiyama 2008 measured urinary 8-isoprostanes down 6.6% over 8 weeks; Nakao 2010 measured the antioxidant enzyme SOD up 39% and oxidative-damage marker TBARS down 43%, but with no control group at all. Sim 2020, which did have a control group, found no overall difference in its primary oxidative-stress markers; the antioxidant gain appeared only in participants aged 30+. The marker moves in some trials and not in others. That is the honest state of it.

The biology

Hydration runs deeper than thirst, water balance at the cellular level shapes power output and endurance.

How H2 helps

Hydrogen-rich water is researched for cellular hydration, aiming to make every sip count.

This is the weakest-evidenced of the four ideas, and we would rather say so than let it sit unqualified. No trial cited on this page measured cellular hydration directly, there is no hydration endpoint in any of them. "Cellular hydration" is a mechanistic framing carried over from laboratory work, not a human result that hydrogen-rich water has been shown to produce. We keep the idea here because the field talks in these terms, not because a study has demonstrated it.

The biology

Your energy is made in mitochondria, and heavy training weeks leave a mess in the machinery.

How H2 helps

H2 has been investigated for supporting mitochondrial function through periods of physical stress.

Mitochondria are the compartments inside your cells that turn food and oxygen into usable energy, and they are also where most reactive by-products are made. Nearly all mitochondrial work on hydrogen is in cells and animals, in the 2015 review of 321 original articles cited further down this page, about three-quarters of the studies were in mice and rats. In humans it has only been approached indirectly: Aoki 2012 through blood lactate, and a 19-person 2019 crossover pilot through a lower heart rate at the same submaximal workload (121 vs 126 bpm). No human trial cited here measured mitochondrial function itself.

The biology

Recovery is where adaptation happens, and post-exercise stress can slow the return to peak output.

How H2 helps

Studies explore hydrogen's role in post-exercise recovery markers in athletes who train back-to-back.

Aoki 2012, a ten-person crossover in elite soccer players, did not see the rise in blood lactate that appeared on placebo, but creatine kinase, the muscle-damage marker, did not change. Mikami 2019 (159 adults, reported as two sub-experiments) found less self-reported fatigue and better endurance. Other well-run trials in trained runners found no performance benefit at all. If there is a recovery effect, it is modest, inconsistent between trials, and has never been tested with a Peakspan device.

QTT report LH2025110014-1 records 8,600 PPB dissolved hydrogen in the sealed cup immediately after one 10-minute cycle on the submitted H88 sample; the manufacturer commissioned the test. Hydrogen declines after opening. That figure describes a laboratory sample, not a dose, and it is not directly comparable with the roughly 500–1,600 PPB used in the trials on this page, which were measured under their own conditions.

Ten human trials of hydrogen-rich water, each linked to the original paper on PubMed with its finding and its limits side by side. Roughly 900 participants have taken part in the human trials cited on this page, across Japan, China, South Korea, Europe, the USA and India, and none of them tested a Peakspan device. These are study results, not product promises.

Supplementation of hydrogen-rich water improves lipid and glucose metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose toleranceJapan · RCT · n=30

Nutrition Research, 2008 · Kajiyama Clinic, Kyoto, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover, 900 ml/day for 8 weeks

Modified LDL fractions fell, electronegative LDL −15.5%, small-dense LDL −5.7%, and urinary 8-isoprostanes (oxidative stress) dropped 6.6%; in 4 of 6 participants with impaired glucose tolerance, glucose-tolerance tests normalized.

Limit: n=30; surrogate blood markers, not disease outcomes; the glucose finding is a 6-person subgroup. Foundational, not definitive.

Pilot study: Effects of drinking hydrogen-rich water on muscle fatigue caused by acute exercise in elite athletesJapan · Crossover · n=10

Medical Gas Research, 2012 · University of Tsukuba, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover in elite soccer players

Pre-exercise hydrogen-rich water prevented the rise in blood lactate during heavy exercise seen with placebo, and peak torque did not show the early decline observed in the placebo condition.

Limit: n=10 pilot; oxidative-injury markers and creatine kinase did not change; the authors call the results preliminary.

Hydrogen-rich water decreases serum LDL-cholesterol levels and improves HDL function in patients with potential metabolic syndromeChina · Open-label · n=20

Journal of Lipid Research, 2013 · Taishan Medical University, 0.9–1.0 L/day for 10 weeks

Total and LDL cholesterol decreased, apolipoprotein B100 and apoE fell markedly, and HDL functionality improved on four independent assays, including protection against LDL oxidation and stimulation of cholesterol efflux.

Limit: open label, no placebo group, n=20; the HDL assays are laboratory endpoints, not clinical outcomes.

Hydrogen-rich water for improvements of mood, anxiety, and autonomic nerve function in daily lifeJapan · RCT crossover · n=26

Psychological-distress scores (K6 scale) and resting sympathetic nervous-system activity were significantly lower after 4 weeks of hydrogen-rich water than after placebo water.

Limit: n=26; mood endpoints are subjective questionnaires; industry funding disclosed. A single small trial.

Drinking hydrogen water enhances endurance and relieves psychometric fatigue: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studyJapan · RCT · n=159

Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 2019 · Nippon Medical School & Juntendo University, two-part trial in healthy adults

The hydrogen group reported significantly less psychometric fatigue and showed improved endurance (maximal oxygen consumption on cycle ergometry) versus placebo.

Limit: effects measured around single sessions; fatigue is self-reported; other well-run trials in trained runners found no performance benefit.

Hydrogen-rich water significantly lowered average exercising heart rate (121 vs 126 bpm with placebo, p<0.001) and respiratory rate at submaximal intensity, without reducing oxygen uptake.

Limit: pilot, n=19; maximal performance was unchanged, the effect is a lower heart-rate cost at submaximal work.

Hydrogen-rich water reduces inflammatory responses and prevents apoptosis of peripheral blood cells in healthy adultsSouth Korea · RCT · n=38

Scientific Reports, 2020 · Seoul National University, double-blind, 1.5 L/day for 4 weeks

Apoptosis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells was significantly lower in the hydrogen group; in participants aged 30+, biological antioxidant potential increased more than with plain water, and transcriptome analysis showed downregulated inflammatory signaling.

Limit: primary oxidative-stress markers did not differ overall, the antioxidant gain was an age-subgroup finding; cellular endpoints are not clinical outcomes.

The Effects of 24-Week, High-Concentration Hydrogen-Rich Water on Body Composition, Blood Lipid Profiles and Inflammation Biomarkers in Men and Women with Metabolic SyndromeIndia/Slovakia · RCT · n=60

Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity, 2020, the longest trial in the field, 24 weeks, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled

Versus placebo: total cholesterol fell from 187.7 to 169.2 mg/dL, triglycerides dropped about 47 mg/dL, HbA1c improved about 12%, and inflammation biomarkers improved.

Limit: surrogate blood markers, not disease outcomes; a single trial of 60 people that needs independent replication at this duration.

Effect of hydrogen-rich water on oxidative stress, liver function, and viral load in patients with chronic hepatitis BChina · RCT · n=60

Clinical and Translational Science, 2013 · Second Military Medical University, Shanghai, 6 weeks alongside standard care

Oxidative-stress markers improved markedly only in the hydrogen-water group over 6 weeks, with good tolerability.

Limit: liver function and viral load did not improve beyond standard care, biomarker-positive, clinically null. Never read this as a hepatitis treatment.

The human evidence base is real but early-stage: concentrations in published trials (roughly 500–1,600 PPB) and daily volumes (0.5–2 L) vary widely, the field's largest trial, a 178-patient, 72-week Parkinson's RCT, was null, and null results are retained on this page deliberately. Study findings describe what specific trials measured in specific populations; they do not establish that any product diagnoses, treats, cures or prevents any disease.

The honest part

What We Don't Know Yet

Ten trials read well in a row. Here is what they still cannot tell you, written down on purpose, because a page that only lists the encouraging findings is not a science page. If any of these gaps close, this section changes.

Nobody has tested our devices

Not one study on this page used a Peakspan H2 bottle or pitcher. The trials used their own hydrogen-water sources at their own concentrations. Our H88 has a manufacturer-commissioned hydrogen report for one submitted sample; our W10-2 pitcher has no hydrogen test at all. Research on molecular hydrogen is not evidence about a specific product, and we will not present it as such.

There is no established dose

Published protocols range from roughly 500 to 1,600 PPB and from 0.5 to 2 litres a day, over 4 to 24 weeks. No one has run the dose-ranging work that would say how much, how often, or for how long, and nothing on this page can tell you what to do personally. That is a question for a qualified clinician, not a product page.

The mechanism is unsettled

The selective-antioxidant hypothesis from 2007 is the most cited explanation, not a proven one. Other groups argue the reaction rates are too slow to account for the effects reported, and propose gene-signalling or gut-microbiome pathways instead. Nobody has yet shown, in a human, which explanation is right.

Long-term effects are unmeasured

The longest trial in healthy or metabolic-syndrome adults cited here ran 24 weeks in 60 people. The field has gone longer exactly once, the 178-patient, 72-week Parkinson's trial cited further down this page, and that one was null. Beyond those, nothing tells us what daily use does over years, in either direction. Reported tolerability inside a short study is not a long-term safety finding, and it is not an approval of anything.

The healthy-person evidence is thin

Most of the stronger trials recruited people with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome or chronic hepatitis B, populations chosen because their markers are abnormal enough to move. Whether the same markers shift in a healthy adult, and whether that would mean anything, has barely been tested.

Small trials, and the ones that failed

Most of this literature is 10 to 60 participants, several studies are open-label with no control group, some disclose industry funding, and small positive results are more likely to reach print than small null ones. The field's largest and longest trial, the 178-patient, 72-week Parkinson's RCT, was null, and it stays on this page for exactly that reason. Almost none of these findings has been independently replicated at the same duration.

What reaches you is unquantified

A concentration measured in a sealed laboratory cup is the starting figure, not the delivered one. Dissolved hydrogen leaves water once it is opened, and how much of any measured figure survives pouring, drinking and absorption has not been established for either of our devices. Breath-hydrogen work shows a 10–15 minute peak after drinking and clearance within about an hour; that describes how quickly hydrogen leaves the body, and it does not tell you how much of it ever reached you.

What would change our minds

Independent, model-specific hydrogen testing of both devices commissioned by us rather than the manufacturer; a hydrogen test for the W10-2 pitcher, which does not exist today; and larger pre-registered replications in healthy adults with real-world endpoints. Until then, everything on this page is described as research, and every document we hold, including the gaps, is published on the documents page.

How Hydrogen Water Works

No additives, no cartridges, just water carrying dissolved molecular hydrogen gas.

What the manufacturer lists

The manufacturer describes both records as electrolysis devices. Platinum-titanium electrode plates and a DuPont Nafion N117 PEM/SPE membrane sit at the heart of the cell; this page does not assert byproduct profile.

How concentration is reported

PPB means parts per billion; 1,000 PPB equals 1 PPM. A concentration result must be read with its sample, water, method, cycle time and measurement timing.

Timing changes the measurement

Dissolved hydrogen leaves water over time. One human study reported a 10–15 minute breath-hydrogen peak after drinking, but that result does not establish a product dose or ideal drinking schedule.

Inside the two devices

How Our Two Devices Make Hydrogen Water

Peakspan has measured neither device. For one submitted H88 sample, QTT report LH2025110014-1 records 8,600 PPB in the sealed cup immediately after one 10-minute cycle; the manufacturer commissioned the report. The W10-2 runs at a gentler everyday concentration for bigger volumes; no model-specific hydrogen test exists, so no figure is published.

H2 Quantum Flask

A 320 ml H88 bottle with 5- and 10-minute modes. QTT measured 8,600 PPB in the sealed cup immediately after one 10-minute cycle (LH2025110014-1) and found ozone not detected in water from an H88 after a separate 10-minute test (LH2025110015-1). Both reports were commissioned by the manufacturer and cover the submitted samples. Platinum-titanium plates, Nafion N117 membrane; use low-mineral water (TDS below 5).

H2 Pitcher

An approved 2 litre W10-2 pitcher with a provisional evidence record. Four independent sellers list a 3-minute cycle and two electrode chambers are visible, but final electrical details are announced with the production run. Hydrogen concentration: a gentler everyday rating; source listings vary and no W10-2 hydrogen test exists, so no figure is published.

What we have not done

We have not measured the hydrogen concentration of either device ourselves, the bottle's lab reports were commissioned by the manufacturer, and the pitcher has no hydrogen test at all. We publish every document we hold on our certificates page, labelled for exactly what each one covers, including the gaps.

Drink it fresh

Dissolved hydrogen dissipates from water over time, that is simply what a dissolved gas does. Drink your water soon after the cycle finishes rather than leaving it to stand.

Evidence area 01

Studied for Energy, Fatigue & Exercise Recovery

Hydrogen-rich water has been tested in more than a dozen human exercise trials, in soccer players, cyclists, runners, and swimmers. In a large Japanese randomized trial, drinking hydrogen water before exercise reduced perceived fatigue and improved endurance markers, and several small trials report lower blood lactate and faster heart-rate recovery after hard sessions. Not every study found a benefit, two trials in trained runners showed no performance change, so research suggests promise for fatigue and recovery, but results are mixed and study sizes remain small.

16 professional players: sprint times 3.4% and 2.7% faster in the final two sprints with hydrogen water; lactate and perceived exertion unchanged.

It didn't stop players tiring, it blunted the late-game slowdown. Limit: benefits confined to the last few sprints.

Hydrogen Rich Water Improved Ventilatory, Perceptual and Lactate Responses to ExerciseCrossover

Studied as a Selective Antioxidant: Hydrogen Water & Oxidative Stress Research

Oxidative stress, damage from unstable molecules called free radicals, is linked to everyday fatigue, skin aging, and long-term wellness. In 2007, a landmark Nature Medicine study found that molecular hydrogen can selectively neutralize the most damaging free radical, the hydroxyl radical. Since then, small human trials have studied hydrogen-rich water for antioxidant effects: in one 8-week pilot, an oxidative-damage marker in urine fell 43%, and antioxidant enzyme activity rose 39%. Research is early-stage, but growing, and not every trial is positive.

The effects of 6-month hydrogen-rich water intake on molecular and phenotypic biomarkers of aging in older adults aged 70 years and over: a randomized controlled pilot trialPilot

40 adults over 70, 0.5 L/day for 6 months: telomere length was preserved (0.99→1.02 vs 0.92→0.79 on control water) and chair-stand performance improved; most other outcomes showed no difference.

The one human "longevity-adjacent" trial, intriguing, not proof. Limit: one small pilot; needs independent replication.

Hydrogen-rich electrolyzed warm water represses wrinkle formation against UVA ray together with type-I collagen production and oxidative-stress diminishmentPilot

In skin cells under UVA, type-I collagen synthesis ran ~2× higher with hydrogen water; in a 6-person bathing study, neck wrinkles improved in 4 subjects at day 90.

Early skin evidence people love to cite. Limit: N=6, no control, and it studied bathing, not drinking.

Evidence area 03

The Mind–Body Connection: Studied for Calm, Clarity & Restful Sleep

Your brain is especially vulnerable to oxidative stress, and research suggests molecular hydrogen can cross into the brain and act on it directly. In a small Japanese crossover trial, healthy adults drinking hydrogen-rich water for four weeks showed calmer stress-related nervous-system activity and better mood scores. Other small studies report improved subjective sleep quality. Early research has even explored Parkinson's disease and mild cognitive impairment, though larger trials there have been disappointing, we share the science as it is, so you can decide with confidence.

Study Conditions Are Not Product Claims

The papers collected here use different populations, concentrations, durations and outcomes. Some report no significant adverse effects under their study conditions; that does not establish safety for every person or approve either Peakspan H2 device. A US FDA GRAS notice for hydrogen gas as a food ingredient is not product approval, UAE approval or an endorsement. Most cited trials used roughly 500–1,600 PPB, while the QTT H88 result describes one submitted sample in a sealed cup immediately after a cycle.

The H88 is rated at 4,000 PPB in 5 min · 8,000 PPB in 10 min. Separately, QTT report LH2025110014-1 records 8,600 PPB in the sealed cup immediately after one 10-minute cycle on one submitted H88 sample; the manufacturer commissioned the report. PPB means parts per billion, a concentration unit; 1,000 PPB equals 1 PPM. QTT report LH2025110014-1 records 8,600 PPB in the sealed cup immediately after one 10-minute cycle on one submitted H88 sample, commissioned by the manufacturer. The W10-2 carries a gentler everyday manufacturer rating; no model-specific hydrogen test exists, so no figure is published.

How much hydrogen water should I drink a day?
